Phillip Eugene Shelton Sr.

     Mr. Phillip Eugene Shelton, Sr., of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away Monday, January 22,  2024 at the Cumberland County Hospital in Burkesville, Kentucky, having attained the age of 87 years, 5 months & 24 days. He was born in Crab Orchard (Lincoln County) Kentucky on Wednesday, July 29, 1936, the son of Dudley, Sr. & Louise “Louisa” (Muncie) Shelton. He was of the Baptist Faith, a deacon and member of Burkesville Baptist Church, and a former member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, He served in and was honorably discharged from The U.S. Air Force, Worked at Cape Canaveral in Florida (NASA) after his military service, Mayor of Crab Orchard for 5 years, retired from the Kentucky Highway Enforcement (D.O.T.), and loved being involved with local church activities including teaching Sunday School, Fellowship meals, and singing in the Choir. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 half-siblings, Alford Shelton, Dudley Shelton, Jr., Beatrice Meece, Grace Payne, 7 full siblings, Arvil Shelton, Geneva Floyd, Lela Mae Bishop, Lawrence Shelton, Johnny Shelton, Larkin Shelton, and Billy Wayne Shelton.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Burch) Shelton, whom he wed on Friday, June 19, 1959, of Burkesville, Sons, Phillip Eugene (& Rolanda) Shelton, Jr. of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Dr. Mark (& Maribeth) Shelton of Burkesville, Kentucky, sister, Dora Francis (Shelton) Bruner of Nicholasville, Kentucky, sister-in-law, Sara Lear of Radcliff, Kentucky, brother-in-law, Bro. Gilbert (& Rita) Robinson of Somerset, Kentucky, 4 grandchildren, Brandon (& April) Shelton, Zachary (& Julie) Shelton, Tyler (& Tabatha) Shelton, and Aaron Shelton, great-grandchildren, Alexis, Addison, Andrew, Beckett, Sadie, Beau, Piper, Saylor, & Sawyer.

The funeral service was conducted on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. C.S.T. at the Burkesville Baptist Church in Burkesville, Kentucky with Bro. Nathan Britt, & Bro. Montel Richardson officiating. Pall bearers were Jeremy Cooksey, Tony Wells, John Phelps, Joe David Brown, Jim Murley, and Michael Metcalfe. Honorary pall bearers were Weldon Rowe, Dennis Sells, Shannon Claywell, Michael Ballard, Greg Cooksey, and Todd Davidson. Burial was in the Crab Orchard Cemetery in Lincoln County, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, contributions appreciated to Burkesville Baptist Church, or the Gideon’s Memorial Bible Plan.
