Dorothy (Carey) Allen

Mrs. Dorothy Carey Allen, of Louisville, Kentucky, formerly of Cumberland County, widow of Charlie Allen, passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023 at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky having attained the age of 99 years, 1 month, and 9 days.

She entered this life on Sunday, September 7, 1924 to her loving parents Judge and Lucy Alexander Carey in Grider, Kentucky, located in Southwestern Cumberland County.  She attended elementary school at Waterview School in Cumberland County and Jackman High School in Adair County. 

She professed a hope in Christ at the  age of 14 and was a faithful member of her church.  She served as the church secretary for many years, as well as the secretary of the  B.I.U. Sunday School Convention and in her later years she served as the secretary for the Liberty and Waterview Churches after they combined.   She loved her church pastor and members and was always willing to do her part to keep the church marching toward Gods Kingdom.  Dorothy was a seamstress at Sutton Shirt Corporation for 17 years, and another 2 years and 28 days at Kentucky Apparel both in Burkesville, Kentucky. Dorothy also did a tremendous amount of volunteer work.  After retiring she stayed at home with her husband but still was a frequent volunteer to anyone that was in need of a ride, or help.  She was a friendly likable person and a excellent wife, mother and grandmother. 

Dorothy was married to the love of her life, the late Charlie H. Allen, whom she wed Wednesday, June 2, 1954.  They were married for 61 years before Charlie went home to be with the Lord.  To this union was born two daughters, Sarah Allen Johnson, and Melissa Allen, both of Louisville, Kentucky.  She was a proud grandmother of one granddaughter, Janelle Elise (Michael) Roberts.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Allen three brothers, three sisters, and two nieces. She is survived by her children, Sarah A. (Thomas) Johnson, Melissa A. Allen both of Louisville, Kentucky, grandchildren, Janelle Elise Roberts of Dallas Texas, two nieces, and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service was conducted on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 2:00 CST in the Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home in Burkesville, Kentucky, with Rev. Wayne A Steele Sr. and Rev. Bobby Bowe officiating.  Burial was in the Waterview Cemetery in Cumberland County, Kentucky.  Casket Bearers for Mrs. Allen were Montrell Alexander, Kyle Grider, Scott Alexander, Stanley Grider, Jimmy Little, and Jerry Smith.
