Clayton Shannon Obituary

Clayton Ervin Shannon, 89, died peacefully in his home on November 24, 2019. Born May 31, 1930 in Burkesville, KY to Ira Turner Shannon and Annie Ervin Jones, he was a retired colonel from the United States Army and a retired English professor. He graduated from Burkesville High school and attended Western Kentucky University. He was a member of the Valley Station Church of Christ and was an active elder until his illness. He is survived in death by wife, Nelda Lee Cary, of 68 years. Also surviving are: son, Parker (Tena) Shannon; daughter, Debra (David) Roby; 3 granddaughters, 2 grandsons and 13 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Annie, his siblings, James "Jimmy" Shannon, Ralph Shannon, Virginia Shannon, Ruth Shannon Anderson, Mae Shannon Poindexter, Robert "Jack" Shannon and his son, Cary Ervin Shannon. Clayton will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a faithful Christian, a faithful husband, loving father and grandfather, a mentor to others, a proud patriot and US Army veteran. His legacy leaves the example of how to provide for your family, guide others to Christ and how to care for others. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hosparus of Louisville. The funeral was conducted Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Owen Funeral Home in Louisville, Kentucky with Monie Matthews officiating. Burial was in the Burkesville Cemetery in Burkesville, Kentucky. Norris-New Funeral Home was honored to be in charge of local arrangements.
